Frequent trains to Guildford and London make commuting practical for many courses. However, moving away offers independence and the full campus experience. Consider your budget, course timetable and personal preferences when deciding.

Choosing the Right University

Look beyond overall rankings to the specific course you are interested in. Consider teaching quality, course content, placement opportunities, graduate outcomes, student satisfaction and support services. Visit open days to experience the campus, speak to lecturers and meet current students. Think about whether you prefer a campus university, such as Surrey or Royal Holloway, or a city experience in London.

Funding Your Studies

Most undergraduates in England are eligible for tuition fee and maintenance loans through Student Finance England. Many universities also offer bursaries and scholarships based on academic merit, sporting achievement or household income. Research these early and apply by the relevant deadlines.

Trends in Higher Education

Universities are placing increasing emphasis on employability, digital skills and flexible learning. Degree apprenticeships are growing in popularity, allowing students to earn a salary while gaining a degree. Universities in Surrey are closely linked to local industries, from space and satellite technology to healthcare and hospitality, offering students valuable research and placement opportunities.

Woking itself benefits from this concentration of higher education. Graduates from nearby universities often choose to stay in the area, attracted by career opportunities with local engineering, technology and professional services employers, as well as easy access to London. Mature students and career changers in the borough can also take advantage of part-time and postgraduate programmes at these institutions, many of which offer evening, blended and online study options that fit around work and family life.
