How to Choose the Right Seed

For farmers, the AHDB Recommended Lists provide independent data on variety performance, helping to choose varieties suited to local soils, rotations and markets. Consider disease resistance, yield potential and end-use quality. For grassland, select mixtures that match your grazing or silage system and soil conditions. Gardeners should consider local climate, soil type and available space, and look for varieties with good disease resistance. Buying from reputable suppliers ensures good germination rates and seed that is true to type.

Supporting Biodiversity

Wildflower seed and pollinator mixtures play an important role in supporting biodiversity around Cannock Chase. Farmers, councils and community groups can use native seed mixes to create habitats for bees, butterflies and other wildlife, complementing the district's precious heathland ecosystems.

Growing Conditions Around Cannock Chase

Soils around Cannock Chase vary considerably, from the free-draining sandy soils of the heathland fringes to heavier clays in the surrounding farmland. Sandy soils warm quickly in spring and suit early crops, but they can dry out in summer, making drought-tolerant varieties and organic matter important. Heavier soils hold moisture well but can be slow to work in wet seasons. Understanding your soil type and choosing seed varieties accordingly, whether for a field of winter wheat or a raised bed of carrots, is one of the simplest ways to improve results.
