Motorcycling in Torridge

Torridge offers some of the most rewarding motorcycling in the South West. How to Choose the Right Motorcycle

Consider your licence category first. In the UK, riders progress through licence categories based on age and experience, which limit engine power. New riders should look for learner-legal or A2-compliant models from brands such as Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Royal Enfield.

Think about how you will use the bike. Commuters in Bideford may prefer a lightweight, economical model or scooter. Riders exploring the Hartland Peninsula and Dartmoor will appreciate an adventure bike with comfortable ergonomics and good luggage capacity. Those seeking excitement on open roads may favour a sports or naked bike.

Test ride several models where possible. Seat height, weight and riding position vary significantly between bikes, and comfort is crucial on longer rides. Consider ongoing costs too, including insurance, servicing, tyres and fuel or charging.

Finally, invest in high-quality safety gear and further training. Advanced rider courses can improve confidence and safety on Devon's narrow, winding roads, which can be hazardous due to gravel, mud and agricultural traffic.

Motorcycle Trends in the UK

The motorcycle market is evolving. Adventure bikes remain the most popular segment for touring riders, while modern classic and retro-styled models continue to attract new and returning riders. Electric motorcycles and scooters are becoming more practical, with improved range and charging options. Rider aids such as cornering ABS, traction control and riding modes have become common, making bikes safer and more accessible.

Torridge's scenic roads make it a fantastic place to ride, and choosing the right brand can transform your experience. Whether you are drawn to the reliability of Honda, the heritage of Triumph, the touring prowess of BMW or the classic charm of Royal Enfield, there is a motorcycle to suit every rider. Choose wisely, ride safely and enjoy everything this beautiful corner of North Devon has to offer.
