Systems intended to obtain a police response must be installed and maintained by a company inspected by a recognised certification body, and must comply with the relevant policing policy on alarm response including confirmation technology.
When selecting an installer, check for third-party inspectorate approval, which involves audited standards and regular assessment. Ask whether the company is registered with the information regulator where appropriate for CCTV work, and confirm public liability insurance.
Notify your insurer of any system installed, as discounts are sometimes available and, more importantly, policy conditions may require the alarm to be set when the property is unoccupied. Failing to meet that condition can affect a claim.

Maintenance is essential and frequently neglected. Batteries degrade, sensors drift, camera lenses accumulate dirt and cobwebs, and firmware requires updating to close security vulnerabilities. An annual service visit keeps the system reliable and, for graded systems, is often a condition of continued certification.
Above all, remember that technology supplements good habits. Locking doors, securing windows, avoiding public posts about holidays, and building a relationship with neighbours who will notice something unusual remain the foundations on which any effective security system is built.
