Top 10 Best Hardware Manufacturers in Merthyr Tydfil

From Iron Capital to Advanced Manufacturing

Few places can claim a manufacturing legacy as significant as Merthyr Tydfil. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, ironworks such as Cyfarthfa, Dowlais, Penydarren and Plymouth made the town the iron capital of the world. In 1804 Richard Trevithick's steam locomotive made its historic journey from Penydarren, a landmark moment in engineering history. Later, the Hoover factory at Pentrebach became one of the borough's most famous employers for decades.

Today, that spirit of making things continues across South Wales through advanced electronics, semiconductors, precision engineering and defence technology. Merthyr sits at the heart of this region, with skilled workers commuting to nearby facilities and local firms supplying components and services to larger manufacturers.

The South Wales Hardware Ecosystem

The region is home to a globally recognised compound semiconductor cluster around Newport and Cardiff, precision engineering leaders, consumer electronics production and defence manufacturing. Supported by universities, the Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult and Welsh Government investment, it offers a strong foundation for innovation.
