Top 10 Best Furniture Stores in West Devon

Furnishing West Devon Homes

Homes in West Devon range from granite farmhouses and thatched cottages to Victorian terraces in Tavistock and new-build estates around Okehampton. Each property type brings its own furnishing challenges, from low beams and uneven floors to compact rooms and open-plan living spaces. Residents want furniture that suits their home's character, handles muddy boots and family life, and lasts for years.

While local independent shops and craftspeople provide unique pieces, many households also rely on national retailers with showrooms in Plymouth and Exeter or reliable online delivery. Here are ten of the best furniture stores for shoppers in West Devon.

How to Evaluate a Furniture Retailer

Consider build quality, materials, comfort, delivery options and after-sales service. Solid wood and well-constructed frames last longer than cheaper alternatives. Check fabric durability, especially for homes with pets. For rural properties, confirm delivery access, assembly services and lead times. Sustainability credentials, such as responsibly sourced timber, are increasingly important to buyers.

1. IKEA

Interior Trends in West Devon

Natural materials such as oak, linen, wool and rattan remain highly popular, reflecting the region's rural landscape. Earthy colour palettes inspired by moorland, moss and granite are trending in interiors. Multifunctional furniture is in demand as more people work from home. Sustainability continues to shape choices, with vintage, upcycled and locally made furniture gaining popularity. Many residents also support local craftspeople who create bespoke pieces from reclaimed and regional timber.

Practical Tips for Furniture Shopping

Measure rooms, doorways, staircases and low beams carefully before ordering, as older Devon properties can be tricky for large items. Test sofas and beds in person where possible. Choose stain-resistant fabrics for homes with children or pets. Check delivery and returns policies, and ask whether old furniture can be removed or recycled.

Local Craftsmanship and Second-Hand Treasures

West Devon has a strong tradition of rural craftsmanship, and many local joiners and furniture makers create bespoke tables, dressers, window seats and built-in storage designed for awkward cottage spaces. Commissioning a local maker can produce a unique piece that fits perfectly and lasts for generations. Antique shops, reclamation yards and auction houses across Devon are also excellent sources of characterful furniture, while charity shops and furniture reuse projects offer affordable options that keep good pieces in circulation. Mixing new furniture from national retailers with reclaimed or locally made pieces creates homes full of warmth and personality, perfectly in keeping with the district's heritage.

When buying second-hand, check frames for woodworm and structural damage, and look for fire safety labels on upholstered items.

Conclusion

From IKEA's practical designs to Oak Furnitureland's sturdy hardwoods and Loaf's relaxed comfort, West Devon residents have excellent furniture options. By choosing quality pieces that suit your home's character and your lifestyle, you can create comfortable, inviting spaces that stand the test of time.
