Furniture Trends in South Hams

Natural and sustainable materials dominate interior choices in South Hams. Oak, reclaimed timber, rattan, linen and wool reflect the district's love of nature and its environmental values. Many shoppers prefer furniture with responsible timber certification, low-impact finishes and designs built to last for generations rather than fast-fashion pieces.

Coastal interior style remains enduringly popular. It features light, airy colour palettes, soft blues and whites, natural textures and relaxed, comfortable seating. Holiday let owners in Salcombe, Hope Cove and Dartmouth often invest in this look to create inviting spaces that photograph well for booking platforms.

Second-hand, antique and upcycled furniture also has a strong following. Totnes has a long tradition of antique and vintage shops, and many residents enjoy mixing heritage pieces with contemporary designs. Restoring and repurposing furniture reduces waste and creates unique interiors full of character.

Tips for Buying Furniture

Measure carefully before you buy, paying particular attention to doorways, staircases and low ceilings in older cottages, which can make delivering large items difficult. Ask retailers about delivery to rural or narrow-lane addresses, and check whether they offer room-of-choice delivery and assembly.

Consider durability and maintenance, especially for holiday lets and family homes. Performance fabrics, removable covers and solid wood construction stand up better to heavy use. Supporting local craftspeople and independent furniture makers in South Hams can also give you bespoke pieces that suit your home perfectly.

Furnishing Holiday Lets

Holiday let owners face particular demands. Furniture must be comfortable, easy to clean and robust enough for frequent changeovers, while still looking stylish in listing photographs. Many owners choose neutral, coastal colour schemes, washable covers and solid wood pieces, and refresh accessories such as cushions and throws each season to keep properties looking new.

Conclusion

Furnishing a home in South Hams is a chance to celebrate character, craftsmanship and coastal living. Whether you choose affordable practicality from IKEA and The Range, timeless quality from Neptune and John Lewis, or relaxed comfort from Loaf, the right furniture can turn your property into a welcoming retreat that reflects the beauty of South Devon.
